Panda Peeks – Avra Greek Restaurant

avra greek restaurant bangkok

I had a very good opportunity to dine at the authentic Greek Restaurant known as ‘Avra’, located at Sukhumvit 33. It’s my first time to try Greek food, and that made me feel excited!

I had my first impressions upon my arrival right in front of Avra restaurant. In my opinion, it resembles like a big Greek boat, with its color tones white and blue. The inside were designed with some kind of earthenware pot with nets on the ceiling, yellow chandeliers and Roman pictures on the wall.

If you love good, quiet ambience together with healthy food, I guess here will suit you well.

Avra has an open kitchen so you can enjoy watching how they cook your meals if you’re interested. The executive Chef’s Konstantinos Sarrimavrogenis who had many years of experience about Greek cuisine in the most famous 5-star hotel in Greece. With these credentials, I know I can be confident that I’ll experience authentic Greek food.

We went inside the kitchen to have a quick peek at how they prepare the food.

Our first dish is served and it’s called the Gyros Kotopoulo, a kind of grilled chicken kebab with onions and tomato served with pita bread, tzatziki dip and fried potatoes. It looked so healthy and tasty. I start to eat some and wonder why their onion was so sweet? I loved it, and I usually don’t like onions on my dish. I combine them all together to eat it in one bite. Delicious!

While I was eating, I was served a kind appetizer mix called the Variety of Mezedes, which includes Kolokythotyropita, Kotopita, Kasetokroketes and Melitzanobourekakia. This dish is paired with a variety of different fried finger food such as slices of zucchini, tomato balls and fried grape leaves.

There were 2 dips with these but I preferred the white dip over the red dip, I thought the red one was overpowering for my taste. On the other hand, my senior likes red dip more than I did.

Then another dish came, the Greek salad which includes tomatoes, cucumber, olives, onions, capers, feta cheese and olive oil. The salad’s very fresh and combines well with the virgin olive oil.

And what we shouldn’t miss is the dessert! The Baklava, which is a traditional Greek dessert. It’s made by layering 35 times of crispy golden brown phyllo that the chef puts carefully one by one, alternating with chopped nuts and then garnished with honey syrup. The chef cuts it in 2 small pieces and adds chocolate syrup underneath before serving.

The first bite was full-flavored, with a dominant texture of the combined layers of phyllo and nuts in my mouth. If you order this dessert, I recommend you to share it with 2-3 people.

You don’t have to go to Greece just to experience authentic Greek food. You only need to take you and your friends to Sukhumvit 33, or order Avra via foodpanda. That’s as easy as it gets!
