Guide to Bangkok – นำเที่ยวย่านบางรัก (Bangrak – Charoenkrung)

“Bang Rak” is one of the 50 districts of Bangkok and one of Bangkok’s historic neighborhood. It is a big district so today I’m going to take you to Bang Rak – Charoenkrunng road part, it is known as a home to countless restaurants, food shops and stalls run by local cooks who are proud of their culinary heritage handed down from generation to generation.

“บางรัก” เป็น 1 ใน 50 เขตของกรุงเทพ และก็ยังเป็นเขตเก่าแก่มีประวัติศาสตร์ด้วยนะคะ วันนี้ฟู้ดแพนด้าจะพาทุกคนไปเที่ยวเขตบางรักกัน แต่เนื่องจากเขตบางรักครอบคลุมพื้นที่เยอะมากๆ เราเลยจะไปเที่ยวกันที่ส่วนของถนนเจริญกรุงกันก่อน ซึ่งตรงเส้นถนนเจริญกรุงถือเป็นแหล่งที่มีร้านอาหารอร่อยเยอะมากๆ หลายๆร้านเป็นร้านดัง มาลองดูกันนะคะว่า ร้านที่ฟู้ดแพนด้าจะพาไปวันนี้มีร้านไหนบ้าง

Getting here is really easy, the most convenient way is taking the BTS and get off at Saphan Taksin exit 3, the last station before crossing over the Chao Phraya River, and that’s it, congratulations! You have just arrived at one of the most dynamic areas in the Thai capital.

การมาที่นี่ก็ไม่ยากเลยค่ะ แค่ขึ้นรถไฟฟ้า แล้วมาลงที่สถานีสะพานตากสิน ออกทางออกที่ 3 จะเจอถนนเจริญกรุง ทั้งเส้นเป็นที่ตั้งของร้านอาหารเยอะมาก บริเวณนี้ยังเป็นบริเวณที่มีสีสันมากๆสุดๆที่หนึ่งของกรุงเทพฯด้วยค่ะ

8.00 am | Start Exploring Bangrak – เริ่มสำรวจย่านบางรัก

Wakey wakey, rise and shine! If you wish to know Bang Rak at its best, you’d better start early. Let’s start our day with a stroll around the neighborhood.
ถ้าจะมาเดินเล่นแถวนี้ต้องตื่นเช้าๆหน่อยนะคะ เรามาเริ่มสำรวจบางรักกันดีกว่า

The first place you need to visit is the iconic Bangrak Market; located on Charoen Krung Road next to Shangri-La Hotel. Neighborhood residents tend to come here to buy good quality meat, seafood, fresh fruits and flowers at reasonable prices.

ที่แรกที่น่าไปคือ ตลาดบางรัก ค่ะ ตั้งอยู่ติดกับโรงแรมแชงกรีล่าเลย ส่วนใหญ่คนจะมาที่ตลาดเพื่อซื้อวัตถุดิบในการทำอาหาร ผลไม้สดๆ แล้วก็ดอกไม้ค่ะ เรียกได้ว่ามาที่เดียวมีครบทุกอย่าง แถมราคาก็ไม่แพงมากด้วย

Once you finish the market tour, cross the road and let’s grab our breakfast.

ใครเดินเล่นตลาดจนเหนื่อยแล้ว แนะนำให้ข้ามถนน เราจะไปทานข้าวเช้ากันค่ะ

Don’t expect anything glamorous as I will take you to “Jok Prince” but don’t let its location scares you away. Yeah…. I know it’s just a small food stall located in a dark and narrow alley. It has been around for more than 50 years and many people (myself included) say that it serves the best congee in Bangkok.

มาถึงบางรักต้องไปกินอาหารขึ้นชื่อค่ะ และร้านที่ดังสุดๆของแถวนี้คือ โจ๊กปรินซ์ ค่ะ อย่าเพิ่งวิ่งหนีนะคะ ถ้าเดินไปแล้วเจอร้านตั้งอยู่ในซอยแคบๆมืดๆ โจ๊กที่นี่ หลายคนการันตีว่า เป็นโจ๊กที่อร่อยที่สุดในกรุงเทพฯเลยค่ะ

Every day, locals, expats, and tourists drop by this place to have Thai-style breakfast. It’s always packed with many people, you’re most likely to wait for around 10-15 minutes to be served and the congee is normally sold out before 10 am (That’s why I’ve told you to start your Bang Rak adventure as early as possible.)

ทุกๆวัน ทั้งคนไทย หรือนักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติจะมาต่อคิวซื้อโจ๊กที่ร้านกันเยอะมาก อาจจะต้องรอสักประมาณ 10 นาทีนะคะ และที่สำคัญโจ๊กที่นี่หมดเร็วมาก บางทีไปถึงตอนสิบโมงเช้าก็ขายหมดแล้ว อยากมาลองโจ๊กปรินซ์ต้องมาแต่เช้านะ

They serve super smooth congee with the really huge size of tender minced pork balls and they are not open all day – just for (early) breakfast and supper. Closing time changes day to day depends on the availability.

โจ๊กที่นี่นุ่มเนียนมาก เสิร์ฟมากับหมูชิ้นใหญ่มาก ร้านไม่ได้เปิดทั้งวัน แต่จะขายแค่ตอนเช้ากับเย็นๆ เวลาปิดแต่ละวันจะไม่เหมือนกัน แล้วแต่ค่ะ ถ้าขายหมดเร็วก็ปิดเร็ว

Fun Fact: it doesn’t have anything to do with prince, knights or fairytale kinda stuff. The name is derived from the fact that the stall is located in the alley leading to a small “Price” theatre.
ที่ร้านมีชื่อว่าโจ๊กปรินซ์ เนื่องจากร้านตั้งอยู่หน้าตรอกเล็กๆ ซึ่งเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงหนังปรินซ์ค่ะ

The neighborhood is not only real street food haven but it is also a good spot for people watching. I know some of you might think it’s a weird activity but hear me out…
บางรักไม่ได้มีดีแค่ร้านอาหารเท่านั้นนะคะ ถ้ามาถึงที่นี่อยากให้ลองแกร่วๆอยู่ข้างนอกแล้วมองคนเดินผ่านไปผ่านมาค่ะ ฟังดูแปลกๆใช่ไหม เดี๋ยวจะอธิบายให้ฟัง

This part of the city is always packed and crowded. It is also home to generations of people, almost all of them live here since day one of the rest of their lives. The way of living is still pure and hasn’t changed much. Seeing people having fun, going about daily activities is relaxing and enjoyable. I recommend hanging around outside for a little while to watch the dynamic pace of the locals’ lives in order to boost your energy.

ตอนเช้าๆที่บางรัก เป็นที่ที่คนเยอะมาก เนื่องจากบริเวณนี้เป็นบ้านของคนที่อยู่ที่นี่มาหลายรุ่น อาคารบ้านเรือนยังเป็นแบบเดิม หลายๆคนใช้ชีวิตเหมือนเดิม วิถีชีวิตของคนไม่ได้เปลี่ยนไปมาก ดังนั้น การได้มาหยุดมองคนแถวนี้ดำเนินชีวิตประจำวัน ก็เป็นเหมือนการได้มาดูชีวิตของคนท้องถิ่นที่อยู่ที่นี่ ดำรงชีวิตที่นี่กันมานานว่า เขาทำอะไรกันบ้าง แล้วถนนเจริญกรุงตรงนี้ก็เป็นที่ที่คนใช้สัญจรไปมาเยอะมากอีกด้วย บางทีมาดูคนเยอะๆ สนุกกับกิจวัตรประจำวัน เดินทางไปเรียน หรือไปทำงาน ก็ทำให้เรามีแรงออกมาใช้ชีวิตหนึ่งวันที่บางรักเหมือนกันนะ

12.00 pm | Lunch Time – ได้เวลาอาหารเที่ยง

Lunch time! As Bang Rak is packed with classic restaurants and food shops, feel free to choose the place to eat. Among others neighborhood’s classics are listed below:
ได้เวลาอาหารเที่ยง อย่างที่หลายๆคนรู้ว่า บางรักเต็มไปด้วยร้านอาหารเยอะมาก มีทั้งแบบรถเข็น ร้านเล็กๆริมทาง หรือร้านอาหารใหญ่ๆก็ยังมี แล้วรู้ไหมคะว่าร้านขึ้นชื่อของตรงนี้มีอะไรบ้าง

Prachak Roasted duck : it is renowned for ages for their roasted ducks. The two-storey restaurant serves their iconic roasted duck with rice or egg noodle. They also offer wide selection foods including roasted pork, barbecue pork, and dim sum.

ที่แรกคือ ร้านเป็ดประจักษ์ ค่ะ โด่งดังเพราะเป็ดย่างหอม นุ่ม อร่อย ร้านเป็นร้านอาหารสองชั้นมีแอร์ เมนูมีให้เลือกหลากหลาย ไม่ใช่แค่เป็ดนะคะ สำหรับใครที่อยากกิน ข้าวหมูแดง หมูกรอบ ติ่มซำ หรือเมนูอาหารไทยจีนอย่างอื่น ที่นี่ก็มีขายค่ะ

Jao Long Luk Chin Pla : famous for their varieties of noodle and fish balls. It is real to find as it is located near Shangri-La hotel entrance.
My recommendations : Egg noodles with fish balls and yen ta fo with fish balls

เจ้าหลงลูกชิ้นปลา : ชื่อก็บอกแล้วว่าขายลูกชิ้นปลา ร้านนี้ดังเหมือนกันค่ะ ลูกชิ้นปลาที่ร้านทำจากปลาอินทรี ทำสดใหม่ ไร้กลิ่นคาวค่ะ แนะนำให้ลองบะหมี่แห้ง กับเย็นตาโฟค่ะ อร่อยมาก

If you’re in need of something to beat the heat. You can stop by at Nam Khom Wa Tow. It’s a small stall selling several Chinese herbal drinks and this stall, just like almost every food shops in Bang Rak, is famous.

เดินมาครึ่งวันแล้ว ร้อนไหมคะ นี่เลยขอแนะนำให้เดินไปที่ ร้านหว่าโถว แล้วลองน้ำสมุนไพรจีน ร้านเป็นร้านเล็กๆตามสไตล์บางรักค่ะ มีน้ำสมุนไพรให้เลือกเยอะมาก

You can see that this tiny drinks stall is quite popular as people always drop by to get some refreshing and healthy herbal drinks, which many people believe that they have medicinal properties as well. I find several drinks delicious and always visit this stall to buy two or three small bottles of herbal drinks when I pass by the neighborhood.
ร้านนี้ได้รับความนิยมจากคนที่เดินผ่านไปมาทุกวัยเลยค่ะ หลายๆคนหยุดซื้อน้ำสมุนไพรแก้กระหายก่อนจะเดินทางต่อ สมุนไพรบางชนิดมีฤทธิ์ทางยาด้วยนะคะ เรียกได้ว่า เป็นน้ำที่นอกจากจะสดชื่นแล้ว ยังสุขภาพดีอีกด้วย

My recommendations : oolong honey tea, lotus root juice, and Luo Han Guo juice.

แนะนำให้ลอง ชาอู่หลงน้ำผึ้ง น้ำรากบัว และน้ำหล่อฮั้งก้วยค่ะ

3.00 pm | Afternoon Tea – จิบชายามบ่าย

Anyone up for something really really glamorous? Let’s go to Mandarin Oriental Hotel for the lovely afternoon tea, shall we?

ใครอยากทานอะไรหรูๆบ้างยกมือขึ้น ไป โรงแรมแมนดาริน โอเรียนเต็ล กันดีกว่า พูดถึง โอเรียนเต็ล นึกถึงอะไรคะ หลายๆคนต้องบอกว่า after noon tea แน่ๆ ใช่แล้วค่ะ ไปทาน Afternoon tea กันดีกว่า

Located inside the Mandarin Oriental hotel, Author’s Lounge is listed among the most photographed locations in Thailand. That’s not overrated at all, I mean, look at this place with its colonial style interior, its decorations, and the unique charm. Am I in heaven or something?

Author’s Lounge ตั้งอยู่ในโรงแรมโอเรียนเต็ลค่ะ สถานที่สวยงามสไตล์โคโลเนียลเป็นที่ที่ถูกถ่ายรูปมากที่สุดของไทยเลยทีเดียว แต่ลองดูสถานที่แล้วก็ไม่แปลกใจเลยว่า ทำไมหลายคนอยากแวะมาที่นี่ สวยหรู แต่ให้ความรู้สึกสบายๆ นี่เหมือนอยู่ในสวรรค์เลยทีเดียว

It’s widely known that Mandarin Oriental’s Author’s Lounge serves the best afternoon tea in Thailand. And it truly does. The afternoon tea set looks like heaven food, just looking at it make me happy and it tastes out of this world. I love everything here, the place, the foods, and the service. I can’t even find the words to describe how much I love this place. It’s the kind of thing that You definitely have to experience it yourself to understand it. It’s a lovely idea to indulge yourself with this delicacy once in a while.

หลายๆคนบอกว่า ที่นี่เสิร์ฟ Afternoon tea ที่ดีที่สุดในประเทศไทย ลองทานแล้วก็ขอบอกว่า เป็นอย่างนั้นจริงๆค่ะ หน้าตาของเซ็ต Afternoon tea นี่เหมือนหลุดมาจากแมกกาซีนอาหาร แถมไม่ได้หน้าตาดีอย่างเดียว รสชาติก็ดีสุดๆอีกด้วย สถานที่สวย อาหารอร่อย การบริการมาตรฐานโอเรียนเต็ล นานๆทีแวะมาตามใจตัวเองด้วยของอร่อยๆแบบนี้ก็ดีเหมือนกันนะคะ

My recommendations : Mandarin Oriental Traditional Tea Set. Home-made scones, finger sandwiches, western-style delicate desserts and tea of your choice come in the set.

แนะนำให้สั่ง Mandarin Oriental Traditional Tea Set เซ็ทประกอบไปด้วย สโคน เสิร์ฟพร้อมแยม ฟิงเกอร์แซนด์วิช ขนมหวานพวกเค้กต่างๆ เสิร์ฟมาชิ้นเล็กๆ น่าทาน และชาค่ะ

I left the Mandarin Oriental hotel really satisfied and too full for supper. So I decided to end my Bang Rak – Charoenkrung adventure and went back home.

ออกมาจากโอเรียนเต็ลด้วยความอิ่มสุดๆ เลยขอไม่ทานอาหารเย็นดีกว่า เดินทางกลับบ้านก่อนนะคะ

5.00 pm | Explore Bangrak Bazaar – ตะลุยตลาดบางรักบาซาร์ยามเย็น

But if you’re still in the mood for strolling or shopping, you can go ahead and visit Bang Rak Bazaar. You can find lots of stuff; clothes, stationeries, accessories and much more here.

แต่สำหรับใครที่ยังมีพลังเหลือ แนะนำให้เดินกลับมาทางที่จะขึ้นรถไฟฟ้าค่ะ ตอนเย็นๆ บางรักบาซาร์ จะเปิดให้นักช้อปมาเลือกช้อปของทุกอย่างเลย มีทั้งเสื้อผ้า เครื่องประดับ เครื่องสำอางค์ ทุกอย่างที่อยากจะซื้อมีขายที่นี่ค่ะ

Actually, for those of you who are street food lovers, there’re plenty of food shops and stalls here for you to explore. They’re too many for me to list everything down otherwise I need to write a book about foods in Bang Rak. So it’s now your duty to come here and see it for yourself.

สำหรับคนที่เป็นแฟน สตรีทฟู้ด คุณต้องรักบางรักแน่ๆ ทุกพื้นที่ของบางรักเต็มไปด้วยรถเข็นขายอาหาร ซึ่งลองมาหลายร้าน ขอบอกว่าอร่อยเกือบทุกร้าน ต้องมาลองเองค่ะ แล้วจะไม่ผิดหวัง
